On May 9 and 10, we were able to work with a third and fifth grade class at School Street Elementary (Bradford Area School District) as part of Include Me PA coordinated by The Arc of PA. As always, it was an absolutely amazing experience as the children planned and created a large artwork to celebrate diversity and inclusion. During a brainstorming session the month prior, the kids combined quite a few great ideas and decided to create a heart shaped Earth with different people featured as on one of the last pages of “Our Friend, Mikayla.” Titled by the artists’, “Differences Don’t Divide” the two 3.5′ x 6′ canvases (each featuring half of the heart) will be permanently displayed in their school. Neither canvas can stand alone without the other. Each is equally important to the whole, as every student is an important part of their school community. Differences don’t divide, rather they are celebrated at School Street!
On Monday, June 3, we delivered the finished art to be unveiled at their school-wide awards ceremony and fifth grade graduation. The project was introduced and explained to the audience by two of the 5th grade artists. When they shared a video documenting the entire process, tears streamed down my face. Not sure I can put all the feelings into words. Such a privilege to do what we do…work with children to help them make a more inclusive world.
