Last Thursday, Mikayla visited Central Elementary School (Allentown School District) to share her story and the importance of inclusion for everyone. Thanks to a grant from Phantoms Charities, and funding from Air Products, they presented two assemblies to grades K-2 on Thursday. At the end of each, they unveiled a buddy bench Mikayla’s Voice is gifting to the school as a reminder to always be kind. If a student is lonely or having a bad day, they can sit on the bench so others know they are looking for a friend.
Many thanks to building trades students at Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School, Forks Area Art Society, and Mikayla’s Voice volunteers for helping to make and decorate Mikayla’s Buddy Benches (and RIZZ Containers & Disposal, LLC for a place to work!) The benches are finished with tissue paper decoupage, and the blue flight paths of the ladybugs are painted with the wheel from a wheelchair. Each features a ladybug with a yellow spot like our logo, as well as many other different colored ladybugs because we celebrate diversity. It’s a simple message easily understood by students of all ages and the kids at Central loved their bench!
